Captured in a moment of creativity, Lydia Chen engages in plein air painting while seated on a cozy picnic mat spread upon the lush grass.

Creating art is a deeply emotional process for me. Through painting, I reflect on the moments that move me and invite others to slow down, appreciate the beauty around them, and reconnect with themselves and the world.

My work is primarily inspired by the landscapes of British Columbia, with Vancouver’s sunsets at the heart of my practice. Time seems to stand still when the sky transforms with color and light, creating moments that fill me with both wonder and calm. These fleeting scenes have become a source of gratitude and inspiration in my life. Through my paintings, I seek not only to capture their beauty but also the emotions they evoke, the quiet stillness, the warmth, and the sense of connection that nature offers. My Vancouver Sunset Series is an invitation to pause, breathe, and appreciate the simple yet profound beauty that surrounds us every day.

Alongside my landscape practice, I also explore the human figure as a way to reflect on body positivity, self-expression, and personal growth. These works are inspired by my own journey toward greater self-acceptance and celebrate individuality over societal expectations. Rather than pursuing an ideal of perfection, I hope they encourage viewers to embrace themselves with honesty, confidence, and compassion.

Whether I am painting a vibrant sunset or the human form, my work is ultimately about cultivating gratitude, connection, and authenticity. I hope my paintings create a moment of stillness, one that reminds us to appreciate both the beauty of nature and the beauty within ourselves.
